Department of Economics

The Department of Economics at Korea University, walking in step with the university’s identity as a national institution, boasts over a century of history and the richest tradition in the nation. The department was founded at the end of the Korean Empire, during the New Education Movement, by enlightened pioneers under the banner of “Saving the Nation Through Education,” with the aim of providing modernized education in public finance.

 

Throughout its long history—40 years as Posung College and 50 years as Korea University—the department has undergone several name changes, from the Department of Financial Management (Ijaehakgwa) to the Department of Commerce (Sanghakgwa), and finally to the Department of Economics (Gyeongjehakgwa). It takes great pride in being the cradle of economic scholarship in Korea, having produced countless individuals indispensable to the country’s modernization and economic development.

 

In 1999, the department was selected for the government’s BK21 (Brain Korea 21) project, earning recognition as the best economics department in the nation. With generous annual funding, it has since transformed into a graduate-focused, research-oriented department. Comprising world-renowned professors and outstanding students from all across Korea who will lead the nation’s future, the Department of Economics at Korea University now stands on par with the world’s most prestigious universities, establishing itself as a truly world-class department in both history and tradition, as well as in education and research.

Educational Purpose

To cultivate professional economists who possess both practical competence and a high level of expertise, enabling them to respond effectively to the rapidly changing economic environment.

 

Educational Objectives

• Economics Professionals : To nurture experts equipped with strong analytical skills, sound economic judgment, and the ability to compete globally.
